Merry.Go.Round Turné 2022

Location: Östersund city
Arena/Place: Frälsningsarmén
Category: Plays/Musicals
Date: Saturday 27 aug 2022

Merry.Go.Round is both dance and theater, movement and poetry. The music is a mixture of Swedish jazz, opera, pop and NASA's recordings from our solar system. It is a performance full of improvisation and presence, different from most things and difficult to put into words. Press has, among other things, described it as “big and cinematic, as an intro to an unknown world” (Malin Palmqvist, Länstidningen, 2017), and “striking images, pure emotion”. (Seona Mac Reamoinn, The Irish Times 2017)

Between 2012 and 2017, Maria Nilsson Waller created three dance pieces; all of which were based on our last unoccupied sites - terra nullius. The first, Last Land, was an imaginary journey into the desert of Antarctica and Bir Tawil, followed by Founder - a deep dive down to our unknown and inaccessible seabed. Merry.Go.Round is the last piece in the series, where we look into space and towards the unknown future of humanity.

Throughout all the pieces and for Flora Fauna Project's work is that they in different ways illuminate our changing relationship to the environment and nature, and take a closer look at the unknown - the borderland where science has to give way to the myth.

Merry.Go.Round (carousel in Swedish) also weaves in the romantic myth - all these stories and ideas about love, romance and relationships that have dominated the western world since the early Middle Ages. It is a piece about homesickness and the longing of our hearts. Through loops and orbits, in a dance that is as much cosmic as everyday human, the five dancers tumble around each other in a world that sometimes seems torn apart by post-romantic stress disorder, and sometimes holds beauty and harmony. What happens when our paths cross? How can we stick together if our paths diverge?

Dance theater by choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller.

Dancers: Marcia Liu (CHN), Mikel Aristequi (ESP), Elin Hedin (SWE), Kevin Coquelard (FRA) and Sara Ezzell (USA).
